Mombasa and Diani Beach Holidays from Uganda

A practical guide to the Kenyan coast for Ugandan travellers: flights or road, Mombasa versus Diani, the best months and what to do.

Beach6 min readFor travellers in Uganda

The Kenyan coast is the classic beach break for Ugandans. It is a short flight, the sea is warm and there is a resort for every budget, from simple beach hotels to all-inclusive family resorts.

The big choice is between the north coast near Mombasa and the quieter, whiter sands of Diani in the south. Here is how to decide.

Getting there from Entebbe

From Entebbe you can fly to Mombasa, often via Nairobi, and Diani is about 30 to 60 minutes by road from Mombasa airport plus the Likoni ferry or the bridge route, depending on your hotel. Some travellers take the bus or a road trip from Kampala through Nairobi, which is cheaper but long. Because Kenya and Uganda are East African Community neighbours, travel is generally easier, but check current entry requirements and bring your passport and yellow fever card.

Best time to go

January to March and July to October are the driest and sunniest. April to June brings the long rains and the best prices. December is busy, so book early.

Things to do

  • Diani Beach. Long white sand, palm trees and calm water. Great for families and couples.
  • Fort Jesus and Old Town. A half-day of Mombasa history with Swahili architecture and food.
  • Water sports. Snorkelling, kitesurfing, glass-bottom boats and dhow trips.
  • Wasini Island and the marine park. Dolphin and reef trips from the south coast.
  • Shimba Hills and Tsavo. Add a short safari for an easy beach and bush combination.

Tips for Ugandan travellers

  • Choose Diani if you want quiet, Mombasa north coast if you want lively nightlife and shops.
  • Ask about all-inclusive packages if you are travelling with children and want to control costs.
  • Carry some Kenyan shillings for local markets and tips.
