Many Ugandans have seen Murchison Falls or Queen Elizabeth, but few have seen the huge herds of the Tanzanian plains. A Tanzania safari is a different kind of wildlife trip, with open grassland, big cat sightings and migration scenes.
It is also close, since Uganda and Tanzania are East African Community neighbours.
Getting there from Entebbe
You can fly from Entebbe to northern Tanzania, often with a connection, and then travel between parks by road or small plane. Travel within the East African Community is generally simpler for Ugandans, but you should still check the current entry and yellow fever certificate requirements.
Best time to go
June to October is the dry season and the best time for wildlife viewing and for catching river crossings. January to February is calving season in the southern plains. April and May are the wettest months.
Things to do
- Big game drives. Lion, cheetah, elephant, buffalo and giraffe on the open plains.
- Wildebeest and zebra herds. Seasonal movements that change by month.
- River scenes. Hippo pools and crocodile-lined banks.
- Photography. Early morning and late afternoon light is excellent.
- Add a beach. Finish with a few days in Zanzibar.
Tips for Ugandan travellers
- Choose lodges or camps with good guides, because the guide makes the trip.
- Pack neutral clothes, a hat, binoculars and a camera with a good zoom.
- Combine safari and Zanzibar to get the best of both.
