Egypt is a bucket-list trip for many Ugandans, and it is closer than most people think. The Pyramids, the Egyptian Museum, Islamic Cairo and the Nile can all fit into a week.
Add a few days on the Red Sea coast and you have culture and beach in the same holiday.
Getting there from Entebbe
Flights from Entebbe to Cairo are available with a connection or sometimes direct, depending on the airline and season. Egypt has visa options that depend on your passport, so we confirm the current process and the documents you need before you book.
Best time to go
October to April is the most comfortable, with mild days. Summer is very hot in Cairo and the south, though the Red Sea coast is fine for swimming. Ramadan and Eid change opening hours, so plan around them.
Things to do
- The Giza Pyramids and Sphinx. Go early to avoid heat and crowds.
- Egyptian Museum and the Grand Egyptian Museum area. See the treasures of the pharaohs.
- Islamic Cairo and Khan el-Khalili. Mosques, old gates and a famous bazaar.
- Nile cruise. Sail between Luxor and Aswan past temples and villages.
- Red Sea resorts. Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh for snorkelling and relaxing.
Tips for Ugandan travellers
- Agree prices clearly for camel rides and guides at tourist sites.
- Dress modestly when visiting mosques, and carry water and sun protection.
